Mission and Vision

The American Red Cross is a non-profit organization that was established to provide assistance to the populations or communities in need. The organization was established in 1881, and has grown to become a multinational organization found in most countries globally (American Red Cross, n.d.-d). The American Red Cross provides the vulnerable communities with services such as blood donation, relief from disasters, provider training, and coordinating response to disaster events in global nations. The organization has mission and vision statements that guide its activities. The mission statement of the American Red Cross is to prevent as well as alleviate human suffering due to emergencies. It achieves its mission statement by mobilizing the power of its volunteers and generous support from the donors. The vision statement of the organization is to be always there during the times of need through its strong network of partners, volunteers and donors. The organization strive to turn compassion among its stakeholders into action to ensure that those affected by disasters in America and globally receive hope, care and shelter. It also aims at transforming compassion into action to enable communities be ready and prepared for unforeseen disasters, the country accesses safe blood and blood products to save lives, and ensure adequacy in the knowledge and skills of staffs responding to disasters (American Red Cross, n.d.-b).

The mission and vision of the American Red Cross enables it to contribute to public health and safety improvements. The provision of training opportunities to healthcare providers and volunteers ensures that the organization strengthens the capacity of the global communities to respond to their health needs. Developing competence among healthcare providers and volunteers promotes safety, quality and efficiency of care that communities receive in times of need. The focus of the organization on strengthening communities to be ready for disasters contributes to public health and safety. It ensures that communities have the essential resources that are needed to minimize the impacts of disasters on the community’s health and wellbeing. Lastly, the organization’s interventions to create awareness among the public through health education programs contribute to public health and safety (American Red Cross, n.d.-b). For instance, community education on issues such as fire prevention at home reduce the risk and rate of disasters in communities.

Ability of the Organization to Promote Equal Opportunity and Quality of Life in a Community

It does not take into consideration of factors such religious backgrounds, race, political opinions, and race in offering its services to the vulnerable populations in America and globally. Instead, the organization provides its services based on the prioritized needs of the global populations affected by disasters (American Red Cross, n.d.-c).

The American Red Cross also promotes equal opportunity and quality of life in a community through its focus on values that include universality, voluntariness and independence. The organization is an autonomous institution that strives to support global communities without need for gain. The organization also strives to eliminate barriers to care by prioritizing the care needs of the different populations it serves and promoting capacity development. The focus on universality ensures that the organization address barriers attributed to social, economic, and physical factors, hence, ensuring equity in access to and utilization of care resources for optimum health for all (American Red Cross, n.d.-b). Lastly, the American Red Cross provides training to staffs on areas such as disaster response and management and basic life support. The training is important in ensuring that healthcare providers have the competencies needed to address the care needs of the diverse populations for health and safety (American Red Cross, n.d.-a).
